Beyond OSPOs – Build a Strategic Open Source Business Unit – Alois Reitbauer, Dynatrace
OSPOs are essential to govern and support open source initiatives in companies. However, they are often seen more as an advisor than a key contributor to the overall strategy and success of a company. At Dynatrace we have established our open source initiative as a dedicated "business unit" with all related function like product management, engineering and go-to-market. The open source unit "mimics" the behavior of our commercial software units so they can easily interact with us. Since it’s inception the unit has been growing significantly to about 50 people today. In this talk I will cover key decision why we have structure our open source initiatives differently that the "traditional" OSPO: * Building dedicated engineering teams * Strong product management * Dedicated go-to-market and growth roles. * Deep ties into commercial product roadmaps * Relating product growth and revenue goals to open source initiatives * Co-creation of commercial features based on open source Following this approach we see a wider shift and interest in open source. The number of engagements supported by other business is constantly growing. The team keeps growing, even under the current macro-economic situation. The team has established itself as a strategic advisor to other business units.
