Ceph has been a successful solution for storing S3 data for a long time. Many users are now traversing through the lifecycle phase of replacing cluster hardware. For various reasons, it isn’t always possible to augment existing clusters. So, users have to set up entirely new server systems and move their data to these new ones! Migrating data is quite a challenge. In this session, Sirisha Guduru shares an experience migrating petabytes of object storage data between two production ceph clusters without disruption for a large user. Migration of user accounts along with access and secret keys, ACLs and bucket policies from old cluster to new was a tough task. Buckets and live data were copied using the synchronization tools like rclone seamlessly run in parallel. These learnings led to the development of a tool called Chorus capable of synchronizing S3 data between multiple cloud storage backends.

Ceph and CloudStack have proven to be the right stack for cloud service providers, which want to have the complete freedom to grow their infrastructure with their business and manage their stack in the way they want. Ceph is an open-source, software-defined storage solution which can easily scale from a few to hundreds of nodes. The combination of Ceph and CloudStack allows companies to keep their Capex down, save costs on licensing, and use commodity hardware across all data centers.
